Before Christ came, all humanity lived in the life and nature of the first Adam. When Adam disobeyed, he began to live from the substance of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. From that moment on, that fruit became his source and the Tree of Life was closed off, guarded by an angel and a flaming sword (Genesis 3:24). Then Jesus came not to start something new, but to restore what was lost. Paul calls this a mystery now revealed meaning it was always God’s plan, but now our eyes can finally see it.
Christ is called the Last Adam, a life-giving Spirit. In Him, everything has been made new “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17. As new creations, we must now learn to live, think, and respond from that new life not the old one. Forgetting the old patterns is often the hardest part, but we must surrender daily and allow God to nourish this new nature. Just as the first Adam expressed the life of the tree he ate from, we too will express the life of the tree we continually eat from. Jesus said, “I am the bread of life…” Whoever eats Me will never die.” “Whoever drinks the living water will have rivers flowing from within.” If Christ is your substance, your daily bread, then His life will naturally flow out of you. That’s why He is called the Last Adam. There is no one after Him, no replacement, no equal. In Him, God has restored everything.
So let go of the old life — and grow in the new covenant, don’t live from the first Adam. Live from the Last Adam, Christ in you, the hope of glory. Remember this: breaking of the bread was a powerful symbolic action that foreshadowed Jesus’s body being broken for humanity’s sins on the cross. The significance of this event also extends to the cup of wine, which he offered after the bread. He told them: “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins”.
This established a “new covenant”: It replaced the old covenant of the law, sealed with the blood of animal sacrifices, with a new covenant sealed by his own blood.
